Welcome & Welcome Back, Witches!
Happy Tuesday, and a quick tease before we get into it, I am pleased to share that the TOP SECRET ASTROLOGY PROJECT tests are going phenomenally, with a host of fabulous volunteers with just the biggest hearts. Expect more on this in the coming weeks, but suffice to say, April is going to be a big deal.
Ok, back to it! Happy Zodiacal New Year! Itβs the spring equinox and you know what that means: Aries Season!
To celebrate, Iβm taking deeper a look at the energy of the cardinal fire sign through the lens of one of my all-time favorite shows: Avatar: The Last Airbender. So strap in for fire blasts, emotional roller coasters, and, of course, dragons. Because no one keeps it spicy like Aries.
Just a quick note: Spoilers ahead for the animated series, the live-action reboot, and, I guess, the movie. So pause here if you want to remain unspoiled for either show. And maybe get a therapist if youβre still planning to watch the movie.
Yes, itβs that bad.
What am I waiting for? Letβs get to it!
Aries: Whoβs He?
Before we dial into the pop culture, letβs get to know a lil more about Aries and what heβs all about. Who even is he?
In short, heβs π₯. And I donβt just mean that because heβs a Mars-ruled fire sign, though the fiery god of war is definitely a core part of Ariesβ heated nature.
Like Capricorn, whom we covered in January, Aries is an initiating, or cardinal sign, meaning he signals the start of a new season, i.e. spring in the northern hemisphere. Whereas Capricorn is about endings and pushing us over the finish line of the year, Aries season is responsible for getting a whole new year going through sheer force of will.
And that igniting force of will is Ariesβ signature energy. And itβs a bitβ¦chaotic.
But the fire at the heart of Aries is so much more than the impatience and impertinence of memes (even very funny ones), and I can think of no better illustration of the range of fire energy than depicted in Avatar: The Last Airbender.
Specifically, the characters of the Fire Nation will be our guides through the light and shadow sides of this energy. In the show, firebenders are broadly painted as villains, especially at the start, butβstay with me Aries folksβbecause they also became the most deeply explored and nuanced nationality in the show.
And that exploration gets into the depths of Aries energy and offers insights on how we can channel the power of Aries in our own lives, especially during this season.
Aries: Villain Era
There are no two ways about it: Aries has a shadow side, and Avatar leads with the shadows. Fire is powerful, but dangerous when not contained, as the show illustrates repeatedly.
Fire Lord Ozai, for example, is fully dedicated to world domination. Itβs not a subtle metaphor: He leads his nation on a quest to engulf the world like a spreading forest fire.
Then thereβs his menacing daughter, Azula, whose internal fury and lust for power is so contained, so focused, she can make lightning.
Lighting aside, they are genuine threats, in part because the power of their bending comes from their very human judgement, anger, and fear β all of which are drivers that create formidable, if less elemental, opponents in our own lives.
The line between passion and anger, between wanting and consuming can be all too thin; Aries reminds us that our work is learning and embracing that balance.
Heart of Aries: Spark of Life
For a large part of the series, the only way firebenders seem to be able to use their power is by channeling deep feelings of anger, shame, and fear. But, eventually, the question arises: Is anger the only way to access this power?
Of course not. Anger is not even the most powerful way to access the power of fire.
The true and deepest source of firebending isβ¦life (and dragons).
Fire thatβs drawn from the spark of life β given by the sun β is more powerful than fury. That spark is the essence of Aries season. That fire of creation is something totally unique to Aries.
So one fantastic way to honor Aries season this year is to get in touch with that spark and giving it a container to burn bright. Ask yourself: what is one thing that lights me up? And where can I make a space for it (or more of it) in my life?
And when youβre done honoring Aries by being the badass you know you are, check out Avatar: the Last Airbender. Itβs is a really good show.
And Thatβs All She Wrote!
She, of course, being me. I hope you enjoyed the read β I had a lot of fun writing it for you!
