The Essence of Libra in 3 Fall Experiences
Exploring the meaning of Libra through the trappings of cozy season
Welcome & Welcome Back, Witches!
It’s been quite an active astrological month, and I hope you are all faring well through it all.
Today, I want to offer a little ode to my Libras out there before their season gives way to Scorpio next week. Libra is a fascinating sign that often gets reduced to the label of ‘indecisive flirt’ in casual astrology. Case in point:
And honestly, there’s nothing wrong with this interpretation. It’s fun, it’s funny, and it’s more or less accurate. But there’s so much more to this Venus-ruled king of the autumn equinox. And I’ve pulled 3 (hopefully) relatable fall experiences that showcase those deeper facets of Libra just perfectly.
What am I waiting for? Let’s get to it!
Apple Picking: Beginning the End
Libra as a Cardinal Sign
Beginning on the fall equinox (in the northern hemisphere), Libra is one of four cardinal signs of the zodiac. The cardinal signs are responsible for beginnings, for initiating the change that comes with the new season.
We usually associate this type of energy — initiating energy — as starting something new. But Libra’s style of initiating is a little different. It starts the end — the end of the year, the end of the planting season, and the end of the light half of the year. With Libra, we harvest the fruits of our labor to prepare for the descent into darkness.
It’s is a very unique “beginning” energy captured perfectly by apple picking.
Literally a harvesting, apple picking is the culmination of a year’s worth of effort. The farms that offer it have done their growing all year in preparation for hosting an interactive fall experience. At the end of it, there will be no more apples and no more growing until next year.
Participants might show up for the Instagrammable moments and ingredients for pie, but what they are really getting is a taste of the impending end of the year.
Stressing Out Over Holiday Cards: Ideal vs. Real
Libra as an Air Sign
Fall is a very earthy season, so it can be a bit jarring to remember that Libra is not a practical earth sign, but an intellectual air sign. Air signs are all about our thoughts and what’s in our heads. And being ruled by Venus, what’s in Libra’s head is often the beauty and perfection of the ideal.
It’s a beauty that rarely holds up to the real world execution.
If you’ve ever tried to send out holiday cards, you might have a good idea what I’m talking about. You can picture the perfect shot. It’s wholesome or funny or sweet — whatever it is, it’s an image that captures the essence of your household. Whatever that essence may be.
But when it comes to actually creating the card, something inevitably goes sideways. Whether someone is blinking in all your shots, or a delay in printing, or — gasp! — a typo, something, somewhere fails to meet the Libran ideal in your head.
Learning to keep moving through imperfection, to keep trying even though we know nothing can be quite as perfect as it is in our heads, is a key lesson of Libra season and holiday cards alike. After all, an imperfect keepsake is better than no keepsake at all.
Hosting a Holiday Get Together: Exacting Tradition
Libra as a sign that exalts Saturn
In all the pink and flighty Libra memes, it’s easy to overlook that everyone’s favorite zaddy and least favorite taskmaster, Saturn, is actually exalted in Libra.
That’s right, Libra celebrates the qualities of Saturn, like grit, tradition, and, for better or worse, exactingly high standards.
A fall experience that captures this aspect of Libra perfectly is hosting a holiday party, especially a family party or one with a long history. Anyone who has ever had the pleasure of hosting knows it can come an immense amount of pressure for everything to be just right (see perfectionism above).
And when it’s a get together centered on a holiday and lots of tradition, well, it can be a bit of a stress-power up.
But the flip side of that, are the rewards Saturn promises are also exalted in Libra. That is the joy of connecting to those traditions can be amplified, as well as the triumph of job well done (especially if the party goes well!).
That little bit of euphoria the next day when everyone has gone home with a soul full of love and connection and you have a week’s worth of leftovers?
That’s Saturn’s gift in Libra.
