Welcome & Welcome Back, Witches!
Before we dive in, just a quick thank you to the newest folks giving Witches Get Things Done 1:1 session a the thumbs up. Today I want to thank Christine, Founder of Canon Collaborative, for a delightful exploratory session and her super kind words.
And just a reminder that whether you’re reeling from the eclipse or the Mercury retrograde is weighing on you, you can book your very own session to learn how to work with your astrology instead of against it. It’s one little hour that can open up big possibilities in your life.
Ok, now to the astrology. This week marks the beginning of Taurus season, as the sun moves into the sign on April 19th. Since there’s a pretty major transit happening in Taurus as well (more on that next week), I want to spend this week getting to know the sign of the bull and dispelling some of the lazier stereotypes ascribed to it.
What am I waiting for? Let’s get to it!

Taurus: The Stubborn, Peace Loving, Layabout
Last month we discussed Aries and the sign’s reputation for pot-stirring and fight starting.
Well, it’s safe to say the stereotypes for Taurus lean conspicuously in the opposite direction. As a Venus-ruled, fixed, earth sign, Taurus often gets pigeonholed as a luxe-loving, stubborn AF, couch potato.
And while I love zodiac memes more than most, there are really interesting nuances behind each of these broad brushstrokes that can help us each get a little more out of this Taurus season than just taking naps and splurging on the finer things.
For the Love of Life: Merida
Merida, the Scottish princess of the movie Brave, is a brilliant Taurean figure because at her core, Merida loves being alive. Not just living, but being alive. She loves to ride, shoot, and climb. She not only trusts but delights in the capability of her body.
Sure, theoretically she’s supposed to be a princess (an ideal which her mother never stops reminding her of), but here and now she loves the world around her and connects deeply to it.
Taurus, following Aries, is the second sign of spring, when the days are getting longer and warmer (in the Northern Hemisphere, anyways) and life is coming back all around us. It’s the call to be outside, feeling the wind on your face and the sun on your back. And being an earth sign, it also prizes physical experiences over an abstract ideals.
Taurus energy shows up when we feel that appreciation of life growing and expanding all around us. When we step back from our computer screens and touch grass, we are connecting with our inner Taurus.
Fixated on an Ideal: Tiana
As I mentioned above, Taurus often gets a reputation as being stubborn, or a bit implacable. This part of the stereotype comes from the fact that Taurus is what’s known as a fixed sign.
Where as signs like Aries and Capricorn are cardinal signs, meaning they start things, and mutable signs like Pisces govern the transition between seasons, fixed signs like Taurus have one job: to move their season forward.
For Taurus, that means progressing through spring to ever more sunlight and life. Symbolically, this can often look like fixating on one ideal and putting everything into making it a reality.
And no one was more committed to realizing a dream than Tiana from The Princess and the Frog. She wanted her own restaurant, that was her guiding light. And throughout the movie she proved over and over that she would stop at nothing to bring that reality about, whether that meant hard work and saving or besting supernatural foes.
She was going to make famous beignets dammit. And no curse would stop that.
Steam Engine Energy: Rapunzel
One thing I hear from clients with strong Taurus placements often, is a frustration with their own “laziness.” But Taurus energy is not lazy; it’s patient and demanding. It is perfectly happy to do nothing, rather than to commit to something that is not up to its high standards.
Taurus energy, to me, is like an old school steam engine. It is massive and powerful, but powering it up takes work and commitment. Once it’s going, it’s damn near unstoppable, but it needs one hell of a catalyst to get moving. Just like one of my favorite princesses of all time:
Rapunzel, from the movie Tangled. Our girl didn’t leave her tower until she was 18. But once she decided to go, she was all in.
She left that tower and faced down every single fear that had been instilled in her since childhood, including ruffians, thugs, men with pointy teeth, and more. What’s more, the force of her will was so strong that she not only faced these challenges, but she enlisted the very boogey men she once feared in her mission.
Shadow of Commitment: Rasputin
We can’t responsibly discuss any sign without acknowledging and exploring its shadow side. For Taurus, that shadow could be represented by any number of great villains, but to be totally honest, there’s only one real contender for this:
Rasputin in the movie Anastasia was singularly fixated on his goal — wiping out the Romanovs. He made a literal pact with the devil, extending his own life to be able to complete his spiteful mission. He even has a sidekick — a bat named Bartok — who spends the whole movie trying to convince Rasputin to do anything else. Let it go, Bartok counsels over and over, to no avail.
Ultimately, Rasputin’s fixation on Anastasia is what leads to his downfall, and that exact dynamic is emblematic of the the Taurus shadow: obsession.
Once that unstoppable Taurean train gets moving on a particular track, we are capable of sacrificing everything in pursuit of out goal, even to our own detriment. It’s the health routine we commit to but never check to see if it is making us feel healthier. It’s the promotion we’re striving for even as we hate our current job. It’s the ideal we pursue in the hopes it will somehow magically fix our lives.
In that spirit, the challenge I offer you this season is simple:
Take a good, hard look at your commitments and honestly answer which ones are serving you?
